The Strelitzia Nicolai is originally from South Africa and is also called Bird of Paradise. The large houseplant is known for its large, feather-like leaves. A true beauty to see, and quite useful as well! The Strelitzia has an air-purifying effect, which means that it produces extra oxygen and breaks down harmful substances. Good to know: it is the perfect large plant for your bedroom, as a bit of cold is no problem.
The Strelitzia is also called the Bird of Paradise plant because its flower looks very much like it. The Strelitzia will produce this flower in nature after reaching the age of four. As opposed to most plants, that flower during spring, the Strelitzia doesn’t flower until fall. That’s because the development of such a large flower costs much more time. As an indoor plant, it’s unfortunately less likely for the plant to flower. But you never know! There is a small chance that the plant will flower after reaching the age of 8. You can stimulate its growth by refraining from repotting it unneccessarily: in order for the plant to bloom, its roots should have very little space in the pot.
Strelitzia plant care
Taking care of this large Stelitzia Nicolai is easier than you might think! The houseplant is delivered with a so-called semi-hydro culture clay granules that absorb water are added to the soil, providing the plant with a continuous water level. This allows you to give a multiple liters of water at once, without overwatering it. The semi-hydroponics allow the water to be released gradually, so you won’t need to worry about watering it for quite a while afterwards. A nice side effect of the continuous water level is an increase in humidity, which has a positive effect on the Stelitzia’s health. A water meter is included, making it very easy to check when this large plant needs to be watered again. Easy does it!
Good to know: the outer leaves of this large Strelitzia Nicolai can turn brown after a while. This is a natural process, and nothing to worry about. You can remove the leaves by cutting them off a few centimetres from the trunk. What remains will then turn brown, after which you can easily pull it off.
Don’t water the plant until the water meter indicates that you should, and spray the leaves regularly.
Place the plant in a light spot, but not in direct sunlight.

Will my plants be potted before delivery?
If you purchase a plant-pot combination, they will be delivered separately. Potting our plants is very easy! You can repot a plant from the plastic growers’ pot into the pot. You might add a layer of hydro grains, which will allow room for excess water to drain. If the pot is large enough, you could also simply place the plant with the growers’ pot in it. Is the growers’ pot a bit higher than the pot? That’s an easy fix. The growers’ pot is easily removed, after which you can press down the soil a bit. Wondering you have to do the potting yourself? Well, by delivering the pot and plant separately, we can pack both extra carefully. This way, we ensure they are both delivered in a perfect condition.
Our plants are delivered fresh from the grower. They make a quick pit stop at our distribution centre, where they are carefully packaged in a plant-friendly box. After packaging, your plants are sent straight to your home!
Because plants are living products, they are never exactly identical to the pictures shown on our website. Height measurements and shapes may differ due to weather conditions, for example.
